What does it mean to adopt?

Congratulations! You've found that special dog or cat that you'd like to bring into your home and introduce as part of your family. Now what?

There are several things to consider when adopting a new pet. We encourage you to consider these BEFORE you make the commitment:

  • Are there other animals already in your home which need to be considered? If so, plan a meet and greet first to ensure they're accepting of a new family member.
  • Does your home provide a safe haven for the animal? Is your yard fenced? What precautions should be taken to ensure the animals safety?
  • What about other family members? Are there allergies or other issues to be considered?
  • Can you provide for the needs of the animal? Food, vaccinations, and routine veterinary care aren't free, and should be considered in your monthly budgetary expenses.
  • Do you have a landlord? If so, you may need his or her permission.
  • Are you ready to make a life-time commitment to the pet? Adoption means FUREVER!
